Growth spurts are a natural part of your baby's development and can happen around 2, 3, and 6 weeks, and again at 3 and 6 months. These timings may vary slightly depending on whether your baby was born early, on time, or later than expected. During a growth spurt, babies grow rapidly and often show changes in feeding and sleep patterns.
What Happens During a Growth Spurt?
Breastfed babies may seem like they’re feeding around the clock for 24 to 48 hours. They may nurse more often and for longer periods. This does not mean your supply is low. Instead, your baby is helping your body adjust milk production to match their growing needs.
Make sure to stay hydrated and eat enough. Keep snacks and water nearby while feeding, especially if you're nursing frequently.
Changes in Sleep
Sleep patterns can also shift. Some babies may sleep more, while others sleep less or wake more often. It might feel unpredictable, especially if your baby was previously calm and settled.
Learning Through Growth
Growth spurts are not just physical. They often come with new skills. You may notice your baby attempting to roll over, or becoming more alert and interactive. Encourage this by playing with your baby and using toys to spark movement.
Feeding Tips and Self-Care
Growth spurts can feel overwhelming. Let your baby feed as often as they need. This is how they signal your body to produce more milk. It does not mean something is wrong with your milk or supply.
Ask for support if possible. Friends or family can help with meals, chores, or caring for older children. Try lying-down feeding positions when safe and comfortable. If someone can help settle your baby after feeding, you can rest too.
Fussy or Clingy Behaviour
It’s normal for babies to be clingier or fussier during growth spurts. Try to keep daily routines consistent, especially around naps and bedtime. Familiar routines can help your baby feel more secure.
Some babies may breeze through growth spurts without much fuss. You might only notice once clothes feel snug or when you see the weight gain.
Take It One Step at a Time
Growth spurts can be challenging but they’re also a sign your baby is growing well. Take it day by day, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
